How does your solar work?
Your solar panels convert sunlight into electricity, which powers your home. Any energy you don’t use immediately can either charge your battery (if you have one) or be exported to the grid.

How does your battery work?
Your battery stores excess energy generated by your solar panels during the day. This stored energy can then be used when your panels aren’t producing electricity for example, in the evening or during cloudy weather, helping you rely less on the grid. You can also monitor your battery and solar energy usage in real time through the app, giving you clear visibility and control over your energy consumption.
How does my inverter work?
The inverter is the brain of your system. It converts the electricity generated by your solar panels (DC) into the type your home uses (AC). It also monitors system performance. Many modern inverters offer app or online portal access so you can view your system’s performance in real time, though this feature may not be available on all systems, especially entry-level options.
How can I get the most out of my solar?
- Use appliances during daylight hours to maximise self-consumption
- Stagger high-usage appliances (e.g. washing machine, dishwasher)
- Monitor your system’s performance via the Inverter app
- Keep panels clean and shaded areas to a minimum
Will I be paid for the energy I export and how do I set that up?
Yes, once you register with an SEG supplier and provide the necessary documentation, they’ll start paying you for eligible exported electricity. To do this, you’ll need a smart meter or export meter installed – typically by your energy supplier. If you don’t already have one, contact your supplier to arrange the installation before applying for the SEG.

What is a Smart Export Guarantee?
The SEG is a government-backed initiative that pays you for the renewable electricity you export back to the grid. Tariffs vary by supplier, so it’s worth shopping around.
How do I apply for a Smart Export Guarantee (SEG)?
To get paid for the excess energy you export to the grid, you’ll need to apply directly with an SEG-licensed energy supplier. Each supplier has their own process, but you’ll typically need to provide:
- Your MCS certificate
- Your DNO approval (this will be provided to us by your Distribution Network Operator. Please note: this can take up to 8 weeks after your installation. If you haven’t received it after 8 weeks, please contact our office)
- Import meter details (these can usually be found on your electricity bill or meter itself)
- Proof of purchase, such as a completion certificate (included in your handover pack) or a receipt (available on request from our accounts team)
- Some SEG suppliers may ask for additional documentation, so it’s a good idea to check their specific requirements before applying.
Can I still switch energy suppliers now that I have solar?
Absolutely. You can still switch electricity suppliers as usual. Just make sure your new supplier supports SEG if you want to continue getting paid for exported electricity.
What is QANW (Quality Assured National Warranties)?
QANW provides independent insurance-backed guarantees, giving you peace of mind that your installation is protected, even if the installer ceases trading. This cover is set up once your deposit has been paid and protects your installation for 2 years. You’ll receive your policy documents directly from QANW via email after it has been processed.
What is a DNO notification?
The DNO (Distribution Network Operator) is the company responsible for the electricity network in your area. We notify them about your solar installation to ensure it complies with grid safety requirements. We take care of this for you.
How often should I get my system serviced?
We recommend having your system professionally serviced every 2–3 years to ensure everything is operating safely and efficiently.
What should I do if I need a repair?
Contact our Customer Service team directly. We’ll help diagnose the issue and arrange for an engineer if needed. Repairs may be covered under warranty depending on the issue.
How do I maintain my solar PV system?
Solar PV systems are low maintenance, but a little care helps keep everything running efficiently:
- Keep your panels clean: Dust, leaves, or bird droppings can affect performance over time. Use a soft brush and de-ionised water to gently rinse the surface. Avoid jet washes, abrasive tools, or harsh chemicals, as these can damage your panels.
- Watch out for shading: Keep an eye on nearby trees or buildings that could begin casting shade over your panels.
- Monitor performance: Use your inverter app to check how your system is performing and spot any unexpected drops in output.
- Book a service: A professional check-up every few years helps ensure everything’s working as it should.
Who should I contact if I want to add more panels or battery capacity in the future?
We’d be happy to help! Contact the Mole Energy team to discuss your options for expanding your system.
How long are the warranties for my panels, battery, inverter and EV charger?
- Solar panels: Typically 20–25 years performance warranty
- Battery: Usually 10 years
- Inverter: Typically 5–10 years
- EV charger: Usually 3–5 years, depending on the manufacturer
Your exact warranty details will be included in your handover pack.
Please note: If you’re not using finance, your balance invoice will be sent by our accounts team via email after installation. If you have any questions, feel free to contact us. (Finance customers will receive payment information through their provider.)
Can I take advantage of cheaper energy tariffs with a battery?
Yes, many energy suppliers offer time-of-use tariffs with cheaper electricity rates overnight. If you have a battery, you can charge it during these lower-rate periods and use the stored energy during the day when electricity is more expensive.
You can set charging schedules and manage when your battery charges or discharges using your battery’s monitoring app. This helps you make the most of your system and save even more on your energy bills.
